Porchie’s Influence Bursting with colour and creativity, this quilt class is inspired by a visit to Portchie’s vibrant gallery in Stellenbosch - where bicycles, bold hues, and joyful energy sparked the design.
In class, you’ll learn how to choose colours using the colour wheel, then dive into paper foundation piecing - a precise and speedy technique that requires no templates. You’ll cut fabric in rough shapes, stitch in sequence onto paper foundations, and trim as you go. The result? A beautifully accurate and striking quilt. We’ll finish with a neat single crosscut binding. Expect a lively, supportive atmosphere where colour and creativity take centre stage.
The finished quilt is 51” x 18”.

Annie’s Fabric Selection Tip:
- Decide on a main colour and select the opposite colour (example: blue for main colour and the opposite colour is orange;).
- Then select an adjacent colour like purple and use ± 3 and more different values in the same colour range: light, bright, dark, dots, multi-coloured, etc.
- Fat quarters and running quarters are better than half a meter of the same fabric.
- Choose a good variety and lots of different fabrics in the same colour scheme for interest.
- For the centre of the blocks and some outer quarter circles, I use large-scale fabrics like Kaffe Fassett’s fabrics or just big scale fabrics.
- The rest is small scale and solids which works well with the spikes otherwise, it disappears.
- The background is a multi-coloured, dark toned-down fabric of the main colour scheme. Stay away from white and cream, especially in the backgrounds of fabrics.
- Use the photo of the quilt as an example.
