Youth Quilt Block Challenge 2012
Calling all QUILTERS
Help to get the Youth of South Africa sewing again! Do your part by mentoring one or more young quilters and both you and your protégées stand a chance to win prizes worth over R26 000. Enter today!
Organised, administered and co-sponsored by "Kwilts innie Bos" in association with the National Quilt Museum of the United States, the Youth Quilt Block Challenge is open to young quilters throughout South Africa. The theme for 2012 is "Nature’s Wonder… / Wonder van die Natuur…"
Who may participate?
Any child in South Africa, under the supervision of a quilter.
There will be three categories:
• Junior School Children (Gr. 1-4),
• Intermediary School Children (Gr. 5 – 8), and
• Senior School Children (Gr. 9 – 12)
Prizes
The following prizes can be won in each of the categories:
• Winning block: R1 000
• 2nd Prize: R500
• 3rd Prize: R250
• Highly Commended: R100
Mentoring Quilter:
A gift voucher from Bernina to the value of R2 000 will be awarded to the mentoring quilter of each winning block. The mentoring quilter with the most accepted entries will receive a BERNINA 350PE sewing machine to the value of R15 560

How it works
The mentoring quilter’s easy pattern for the challenge:
1. Find a school child
2. Add two or more of the above child’s friends
3. Complete an Entry form (in readable handwriting) for each child and e-mail or fax to the number provided (see number under enquiry), before or on the 29th of February 2012.
4. Deposit your R30 fee per entry, into the provided Kwilts innie Bos bank account. Please make one deposit for multiple entries. Fax proof of payment to the number provided.
5. Teach and supervise (mentor) the making of a quilt block by each of the children. Guidelines will be provided to participating mentors.
6. Return the block before 11th of May 2012.
7. Sit back and feel satisfied in the knowledge that you made a difference!
Rules:
1. Although the scholars are encouraged to work together in groups, each child can only enter one block.
2. The size of the block must be 40 x 40 cm square
3. Blocks must consist of at least 50% piecing (patchwork), the rest can be appliqué. It can be made by hand or machine. Embellishment is optional.
4. Scholars must use their own creativity and originality.
5. Scholars may not use commercial patterns and/or pre-printed pictures on fabric or digital embroidery images.
6. Be creative by using fabric that will support and enhance the theme.
7. Trims may be incorporated.
8. All embellishments, if used, must be properly secured
9. Blocks must be clean, should not be quilted, nor lined, framed or mounted.
10. Mentors are advised to refer to the more comprehensive guidelines once the entry form is received.
11. Selected blocks will be used at several exhibitions until mid November 2012 and can then be collected or will be returned via post.
Deadlines
• Entry forms to reach the organisers by the 29th of February 2012.
• Completed blocks to reach the organisers by the 11th of May 2012.
Judging
• Judging will take place during June 2012
• Winners will be notified.
• The judges’ decision will be final.
• Blocks will be judged on originality, craftsmanship and the reflection of the theme “Nature’s Wonder... / Wonder van die Natuur ...”
