Youth Quilt Block Challenge

The Youth Quilt Block Challenge, co-sponsored and administered by “Kwilts-innie-Bos” was successfully run in the Western Cape during 2009. During 2010 this competition will be open to all young quilters throughout South Africa, in other words the competition will be held on a national level.  The national challenge will be officially launched at the Kwilts innie Bos exhibition from the 12th to the 14th of November 2009.

The aim of the Youth Quilt Black Challenge is to promote, educate and expand quilting amongst our youth in South Africa. During the 2008/09 challenge we had 64 entries, from the Western Cape only, and all the blocks will be on show at the Kwilts innie Bos exhibition. Ladies do your part by mentoring one or more young quilters and both you and your protégées stand a chance of winning fantastic prizes.  The theme for the challenge is “Your Heritage / Ons Erfenis”.

The first prize in both the senior and junior section is again R1 000, 2nd prize of R500 and a 3rd prize of R250.  More information can be found in the November / December 2009 Stitches and Bears, or you can contact Linda Wiggett, at 082-874-6805 or Marijke Weitsz at 076-678-7755.

In addition, sewing hampers to the value of R1 000 each will be awarded to the mentoring quilter of each winning block entry and also to the mentoring quilter with the most entries.

Quilters are asked to mentor one, or a group of young quilters.  On payment of an entry fee of R25 (admin fee) each child will receive three pieces of Moda fabric which must be used to produce a 40 x 40 cm quilt block consisting of appliqué and piecing.  The block can be either hand or machine stitched.  Additional fabrics and trims may be added if desired.

Entry forms, as well as the sponsored fabric will be available at the Kwilts innie Bos exhibition.  All completed blocks must reach the organisers by the 23rd of April 2010.  The blocks will be used at several exhibitions until mid- November 2010.
