My first attempt at sewing was at age 5 at my mother's knee when she was sitting at her sewing machine churning out all sorts of useful garments, toys etc. I received my first sewing machine after mom’s ‘fancy’ one (that she had gracefully allowed me to use) went flying through the air due to her tripping over the power cord (that I had apparently put in the wrong place)! This accident not only resulted in new machines for both women in the house, but also countless happy hours sewing together around the dining room table.
From a general love of sewing I tried my hand at quilting, the interest being sparked by “The Complete Quilt Book” by the late Martini Nel. I started quilting seriously in 2004 when I discovered like-minded people (and later friends) in the group “Naaldekokers – Kaap” (based in Stellenbosch) and by attending formal quilting classes by a variety of quilt teachers. Quilting remains a great passion in my life, although I rarely get much time to practise this beloved craft between doing accounting work and being a wife and mother to 2 gorgeous little girls. In spite of these time constraints I have, however, managed to win 2 First prizes in local Quilt challenges, had a quilt chosen as one of 30 from South Africa for the Tri-nations challenge (SA, Australia and New Zealand), and was a finalist in the “Things that I Love” quilt block competition by Stitches Magazine.
Besides quilting, I also enjoy doing machine embroidery & digitizing, utilising computer software to design quilts and draft quilt block patterns, playing around with the latest quilting / needlework gadget, and challenging myself to attempt and master new techniques.
I am incredibly proud of the strong quilting talent that we have in this country, and would like to see that talent being promoted abroad, as well as the craft and art of quilting being promoted locally. I am therefore absolutely thrilled at the opportunity to be on the GHQG Committee and hope to make a valuable contribution in this regard.
(Oh yes, and I am happy to report that, after years of nagging, I finally convinced my mom to take up quilting as well, and although the bug appears to have bitten me a bit harder than her, it’s great to have another quilting buddy!) |
