As a young married couple my husband’s work took us to small towns, rural places and remote areas. I was happy to keep myself busy with teaching some of the local people, gardening skills and later how to start crèches or safe places for children.
In the meantime I experimented with patchwork after my husband Johan, surprised me with a brand new sewing machine. It was therefore natural to get involved in a woman’s outreach group when we moved to the Cape in 1998.
I was delighted when they have chosen patchwork and quilting as their choice of craft. I did a course with Ina Keyter, and was hooked for life. With her permission I used and adapted her notes to suit the Ravensmead ladies and we are still going strong after 10 years.
I realized that I have a passion for teaching less privileged people and love to concentrate mainly on scrappy quilts because at outreach we have to be creative with what we have.
I am grateful to so many quilting friends who not only shared their time but also ideas with me to the betterment of our craft. |
