QUILT SEARCH

Marline Turner is the SAQG Historian & Quilt Search Officer and needs your help to document old quilts.

If you know of any quilts made before 1950 she would be most grateful for this kind of information:

a clear photograph, size, brief description of the quilt, colour and fabrics used, as well as the maker's name, history details and all other relevant facts. Contact her by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Also use the pointers in Patchwork Quilt Detective article below.

In the Western Cape region, GHQG is busy documenting the quilts in private collections and museums in our area. You may have one in your home or know of someone with a quilt made before 1950. If you know of quilts in your town - please collect the details and let us have them. Be assured - we do not want to have the quilt, only details and photos for documenting the item. PUTTING A LABEL ON QUILTS

In May 2003 , the guild historian at the time, Shirley Nillsen wrote this article in our newsletter:

The Importance of Labels
On a recent visit to the S.A. Cultural History Museum, where we were shown quilts in their collection, the one thing that hit us more than anything else was the lack of LABELS - in other words, the lack of information about these wonderful old quilts, some dating back to the 1700's.

How much more interesting these treasures would be if there were more data available?   As modern day quilters let's not allow the same thing be said of us one day in the future!   So, no matter how large or small that quilt is, please make a quilt label and stitch it onto the quilt.  State the date of completion of the quilt, the name of the maker, the recipient (if applicable) and any other relevant information, like the occasion, city or country and even the fabric used.  The vital importance of this information cannot be stressed enough!

If a group of quilters (not more than 15) would like to view quilts at the Cape Town Iziko Museum, contact the curator, Wieke van Delen, on (021) 460-8232.  If only a few members of your group wish to go, maybe team up with another group. It is highly recommended as a wonderful experience.
